RELIGION POLITICS CINEMA
35mm Digital / Smart Phone, Archival Pigment Prints
Seema Krishnakumar was born and raised in Trivandrum, Kerala. She pursued Communication Design Program at NID, Ahmedabad and later at Pratt Institute, New York. Her career in Communication Design remained the base for her photographic activity, and although she had been creating images of life around her, she was only noticed as a photographer after one of her photographs got published in the Times of India daily. She has since had many images published in periodicals such as The Hindu and Outlook. She is currently a teaching faculty in DJ Academy of Design, Coimbatore. Coming from the politicised landscape of Kerala, she looked for the same elements in Tiruvannamalai, and the interplay between Religion, Politics and Cinema became her topic, cinema being a Tamil obsession for decades and religion being part of the town’s identity, as the concrete manifestation of spirituality. She also has contributed a series of phone images to the Public Photo Art Archive Tiruvannamalai.
